《勇敢传说》的故事背景设定与电影相同，虚构于一处群山环绕的「苏格兰高地」，一名出身于皇室并顶着一头卷发的公主梅莉达(Merida)，希望自己能像父亲一样成为受人景仰的英雄，以出色的弓箭手带领国家迈向更繁荣的光景，只不过她的母亲希望她能够是位气质端庄的女人，所以规定梅莉达必须学习弹琴、刺绣等传统礼教，日后成为一位好皇后。某日，梅莉达的兄弟与母亲吃下了女巫的神奇果酱饼干后，却统统都变成了动物。梅莉达为了要弥补自己铸成的大错，必须找出解药并防止国战的发生。
